Gateway meetingsTwo gateway meetings were held in association with the conference both on Tuesday 4 September. Both meetings were held in the conference venue the Aotea Centre.
Indigenous & Pacific Peoples’ Gateway This gateway provided an opportunity for indigenous and Pacific peoples to discuss international, regional and national issues ranging from the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control through to tobacco control/use strategies within various nations. The original inhabitants and other supporters who attended the Indigenous and Pacific Gateway workshop prepared a declaration which they asked the participants of the inaugural Oceania Tobacco Control conference to support.
The first Oceania SRNT meeting was held on Tuesday 4 September as a gateway event to the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference, Auckland, 4-7 September 2007. The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco is a scientific body whose mission is to stimulate the generation of new knowledge concerning nicotine, tobacco, and smoking cessation. The society fosters research at all levels, including basic science through to behavioural, pharmacological and population based research. It was established in 1994 by a small group of prominent scientists who were frustrated by the lack importance this field was given at general medical and scientific meetings. It is now the foremost organisation in the field. More information about the outcome of this meeting will be available shortly. For more information about SRNT see www.srnt.org |
